Migrating applications to an Open or Cloud infrastructure offers significant gains in terms of infrastructure costs, flexibility and agility.
This almost always requires a transformation project for your applications, to make them compatible with the target architecture or Cloud infrastructure of the chosen provider and its specific features.
Hyperscalers offer highly-industrialized Cloud services that rely on special administration and deployment tools, which in the future will link your applications to their infrastructures.
The right approach is to limit these adhesions so as to remain free and independent of these providers.
Deploying mainframe applications
Deploying mainframe applications on the cloud requires:
- a technical stack compatible with the original applications, i.e. covering all source technologies,
- a migration project to cloud-native technologies,
- a mix of both.
To oversimplify, the technologies available natively on the cloud are :
- A Linux distribution (or Windows for Azure)
- A SQL database (often PostgreSQL) or no SQL
- A Java virtual machine.
The inventory of Mainframe technologies to be replaced is particularly wide, given the age of the ecosystem and the large number of solution vendors.
This list is by no means exhaustive:
- Languages or code generators: COBOL (of course), but also PL1, IDEAL, NATURAL, FORTRAN, C, PACBASE, TELON, CSP, EGL, ADSO, REXX, EASYTRIEVE, IQS, EARL, etc., often with bonus assembler modules
- Non-relational databases: IMS DL/1, IDMS, IDS2, ADABAS, DATACOM, IMAGE, TOTAL… and the relational DB2 database, indexed or non-indexed sequential files VSAM, GSAM, QSAM . ..
- Utilities: RACF, SPITAB, etc.
- Transactional monitors: CICS, IMS, TDS, TP8, etc.
- A scripting language JCL (Job Control Language)
- In-house utilities often developed in Assembler by system engineers so brilliant that it’s hard
The emulation solutions available only cover a small proportion of these technologies.
Deploying Mainframe applications on the Cloud or the Open world will always require a migration project and solutions complementary to those natively available on the target.
Similarly, on Open environments, we will find Client/Server heritages with now obsolete technologies such as Easel, Visual Basic, ASP, Delphi, NSDK, Powerbuilder, Oracle Forms, Windev, etc.
Our Cloud migration offer
We provide a global solution for migrating your applications and upgrading them to the architecture of your choice.
Our offer is based on FAKTORY, our suite of transformation tools, and STACK-M, which provides all the additional bricks needed to operate your migrated applications, in containers, on Open infrastructures and the Cloud.
Our technology enables containerized deployment, deployable without modification with any provider.
